Steven Canvas & the Slackjaw Jezebel

After stepping away from music for ten years, I returned to it with a lifetime of shared stages, creative collisions, and unfinished ideas still in me.

Steven Canvas & the Slackjaw Jezebel is how I bring those experiences back to life. Every song carries something from the musicians I’ve played with over the years—their attitude, their instincts, their musical fingerprints, and yes, their actual performances—distilled and reimagined through my own perspective.

When I enhance or reinterpret an original performance, I am not trying to replace the musician who created it. The melodies, hooks, phrasing, playing styles, and individual character of that performance remain at the heart of the music. The technology allows me to restore, expand, and develop what was already there while preserving the identity of the person who first played it.

Slackjaw Jezebel was the original band we were all part of. Although the lineup changed three times, the same core group of musicians continued to shape the songs and the sound. The AI characters are idealized versions of those real collaborators, subtly altered to protect their identities while preserving the musical qualities that made each of them unique.

Everything you hear begins with original music—either a home-studio draft or a full studio recording. From there, I work with the original recordings and stems, reshaping them through Reason, Audime, Suno, and whatever other tools allow the song to become what I hear in my head.

I have never had much use for genre, and I’ve never believed that one version of a song has to be the final version. Sometimes I even cover my own songs, allowing them to change through new arrangements, new voices, and new perspectives.

The AI characters represent the same core musicians, but the way they sound and appear continues to evolve with every release. Together, we form a band outside of time—a place where my past collaborates with the future and no song is ever truly finished, only transformed.
